COPArt is a collaboration between artists, scientists and activists in preparation for, and in response to, the COP17 climate change negotiations which will be taking place in South Africa in 2011.

COPArt is about finding common ground, from which to do something truly groundbreaking.

COPArt traverses the continuum between art and science.

COPArt honours the role of the individual within the collective.

COPArt was born at the Tipping Point conference in South Africa in May 2010.

"The COPART family had a “meeting”, or was it a negotiation? More like a passionate exchange of ideas, of ideals, as well as practical concerns on Wednesday afternoon (18 August 2010). In the well lit, glass encased board room of the beautiful African Arts Institute in Cape Town, we gathered everyone who could make it into this meeting to try help mobilise the various aspects of COPART and recruit champions to help get going. The meeting brought together 12 members (10 in flesh, and two via skype from Joburg). I was hoping that this meeting could rebalance COPART away from “talking spaces” to “doing spaces”, which emerged as a call from the recent Joburg meeting. It was clear, there is a lot to be done, and so far we have spent a great deal of time talking about it, which of course is crucial, but we needed to make some decisions and move forward. There has been a lot to do since COPART was collectively dreamed into this world in May, and to ensure we kept the warmth from that moment of its inception, we needed to get some collective commitments and make decisions together, as a COPART family (we are more like a family than anything else, at this point)."
