Vision

The African Arts Institute’s vision is for a vibrant, dynamic and sustainable African creative sector that contributes to development, human rights and democracy on the continent, and projects African aesthetics and intellectual content into the international arena.

 

 

 

 

Mission

Mission

The mission of the African Arts Institute is to harness relevant expertise, resources, infrastructure, markets, knowledge and information to help develop and sustain creative practice in Africa, and the protection and promotion of the continent's cultural heritage and assets in line with our vision.

Roles of the Institute
1 Civil Society Agenda

To provide infrastructural support to arts-related organisations working to promote human rights and democracy, including access to the media and a free, independent press, in Africa

2 Serve as Links

To serve as a link between the African creative sector and strategic international counterparts

3 Intercultural Dialogue

To collect and distribute data and information relevant to building and promoting the African creative sector

4 Immigrants

To promote understanding and mutual respect between South Africans and immigrants from other African countries, and to advance the rights and interests of such immigrants – particularly creative practitioners – living in South Africa

5 Research

To undertake research and to collect and distribute data and information relevant to building, promoting and sustaining the creative sector

6 Human Capital

To provide opportunities for education, training and mentorships to build the human capital required to grow and sustain the African creative sector

7 Employment

To foster the growth of arts-related micro-enterprises and to create opportunities for employment in this sector

8 Funds

To raise and provide funds and low-interest loans to organisations, companies and individuals engaged in the development of Africa’s creative sector

9 Market

To help to create a circuit for African artists to distribute their creative products and to contribute to building markets for African arts events, good and services

10 Pilots

To pilot projects and models that could be replicated in support of the creative sector elsewhere

11 Pan African Exchange

To facilitate exchange, co-operation and collaboration between artists, managers, educators and creative industries from different African regions

12 Support gov, parastatals, int donors

To provide appropriate support to government, parastatal agencies and international donors active in the African creative sector

13 Support experts

To help support experts in various cultural fields to provide input from African perspectives in relevant national, regional, continental and global forums

14 Partnerships

To establish partnerships with similar organisations across the continent and work with them in delivering key projects
